Whenever I see that play or watch the movie, I want to jump to my feet and sing back, Me! I am afraid of Virginia Woolf! I have a tumultuous, reading relationship with Ms. Woolf, or V. Dubs as my college friends and I unceremoniously dubbed her while studying abroad in Bath, England. I signed up for a Virginia Woolf class envisioning that I would open my mind to an author who pioneered experimental writing, stream of consciousness, and feminist essays. The study trip to Monks House (Woolfs house and gardens) also wooed me. On the first day of class, our smartly-dressed professor walked into the room and announced that, in order to honor the work of Virginia Woolf, he planned to teach each class in an unconventional way. He began by making statements, we tried to come up with questions and ideas, and, eventually, we ended at the main idea for each lesson. I tried to write my notes backwardsâ€"starting at the bottom of the page and working my way up. It was a failure, as were my papers and class comments. The rest of the class reveled in writing papers peppered with anagrams, poems, and feminist rants. I embarrassingly longed for some structure and a bit of linear thinking. Our assigned readings were not much better. I enjoyed the accessible Mrs. Dalloway and Orlando, but balked when we started reading the more experimental The Waves and To the Lighthouse. While he was away, my husband and I snuck off to the beach together. No children equals lots of beach reading. I packed five books and plucked  The Waves off of my bedside table, where it had been buried in my to-be-read pile. Once at the beach, we set up our daily camp: umbrella up, beach chairs on the edge of the surf, and a cooler loaded with IPAs and Strongbow Cider on hand. After plowing through David Sedariss new book Calypso, I gingerly decided to try The Waves. I began with The Introduction and raised my beer to the first sentence, The Waves presents a challenge to the reader. It is an exploration of the workings of the minds of the six named characters within the text: Bernard, Rhoda, Jinny, Louis, Neville, and Susan. After reading this, I felt better. Others find this book challenging! With my feet in the water and the sound of waves crashing and rolling around me, I started reading. An amazing thing happened. I stopped thinking so hard about the text and let it wash over me like the waves. The characters and the settings became clear in my mind. I found myself emotionally thinking of my own childhood and making connections to cherished books. While exploring the garden, Bernard says, Let us inhabit the underworld. Let us take possession of our secret territory, which is lit by pendant currents like candelabra. I thought of Jesse and Lesley crossing the downed tree to enter Teribithia and how my childhood neighbor and I created our own secret kingdom behind my tool shed. Later on, the characters are leaving for boarding school and Louis says, He is composed, he is easy. He swings his bag as he walks. I will follow Bernard, because he is not afraid. I thought of my own first days in at my all-girls high school, trying to emulate the girls who seemed the most confident, to mask my own awkwardness and fear of starting something new. Neville looks to the sky and says,The clouds lose tufts of whiteness as the breeze dishevels them. If that blue could stay for ever; if that hole could remain for ever; if this moment could stay for ever. I read that line and felt the same way, I wanted this moment to stay forever. I felt I owed Virginia Woolf an apology. Her books are beautiful! Those days on beach, with my feet in the water and sound of the waves the only sound I could hear, I felt Virginia Woolf opening in my eyes a thousand eyes of curiosity. On the other hand, hope was the most prominent message portrayed in the novel and film. â€Å"†¦ I hope† (King, 107) hope was found in many various parts of Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, such as, the hope to be free, hope to survive and so on. â€Å"Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. † Another theme that is very obvious in Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption is crime. Crime is found all throughout the film and novel because the setting takes place in a prison. Tommy Williams came to Shawshank in 1965†¦ Cops caught him sneaking TV sets out the back door of a JC Penney. † Every crime that was committed in the novel and film stuck to the same details and explanation, making both the novel and film very similar. â€Å"I committed murder. Furthermore, the film was so similar to the novel that most key scenes were word for word. One key scene, being Andy’s murder trial, seemed to be directly taken out of the novel. â€Å"Since I am innocent of this crime, I find it decidedly inconvenient that the gun was never found. † In this scene, the dialect is the same for both the novel and the film, for example, â€Å"It’s neither convenient nor inconvenient. Only the truth. † (King, 24) Equally important, Andy’s escape scene was captured similarly in the film when compared to the novel. â€Å"Geology is the study of pressure and time. That’s all it takes really†¦ pressure†¦ and time†¦ That, and a big goddamn poster. Andy spent years on end working away at his escape hole in the novel and the film; Andy knew what it took because of his knowledge in geology. â€Å"Ripped the poster from the wall†¦ and revealed the gaping, crumbled hole in the concrete behind it. † (King, 87) Lastly, when Andy meets tommy, tommy realizes that Andy is innocent and he knows who actually committed the murders. This is another scene that plays out the same in both the novel and the film. â€Å"It’s my life. Don’t you understand? IT’S MY LIFE! † in the film Andy begs Warden Norton to understand his situation and pleads that he is innocent. He began refreshing Norton on the details of the crime he had been imprisoned for. Then he told the warden exactly what Tommy Williams had told him. † (King, 64-65) in the novel Andy hopes that Norton will listen to the information he has heard and that Norton will be understanding, but instead Norton shut him down. As shown above, the key scenes in the novel and film have the same details and context. In conclusion, the film Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Steven King portrayed the novel in a very similar way. It does so by portraying the characters, key scenes and messages in similar ways in both the novel and film.

On June 23, 1812 Napoleon's Grande Armee, over 500,000 men strong, poured over the Russian border. An equal amount of Russian forces awaited them. The result of the campaign was a surprise. Two authors, General carl von Clausewitz and Brett James, show similarities in reasons why Napoleon had lost this campaign to Russia. Napoleon believed that after a few quick victorious battles, he could convince Alexander to return to the Continental System. He also decided that if he occupied Moscow, the Russian government would crumple and ask for peace. " A single blow delivered at the heart of the Russian Empire, at Moscow the Great, at Moscow the Holy, will ineztly put this whole blind, apathetic mass at my mercy." pg 6, 1812 Napoleon's Defeat in Russia. This was his belief he expressed in March 1812. However, when Napoleon eventually took over Moscow, the Tsar still did not surrender. Napoleon, sent a message to the Tsar, demanding a immediate surrender. However, the Tsar could not surrender because if he did, he would be assassinated by the nobles. Clausewitz replies by saying, " Napoleon was unable to grasp the fact that Alexander would not, could not negotiate. General Clausewitz said, "Napoleon believed if he defeated the Russian Army and occupied Moscow, the Russian leadership will fall apart and the government would call for peace." pg 253, The Campaign of 1812 in Russia Brett James also agreed that Napoleon's occupation had no result. " The occupation of Napoleon in Moscow did not have a effect on the government." pg 13, 1812 Napoleon's Defeat in Russia With his battle plan set, Napoleon prepared his troops for the attack on Russia. But, Napoleon did not consider the fierce Russian winter which awaited him. According to Ludwig Wilhelm Gottlob Schlosser, a onlooker, he described the army by saying, "The French, down to the lowliest drummer were very fastidious. These poor French devils were not satisfied with less than soup, meat and vegetables, roast, and salad for their midday meal, and there was no sign of their famous frugality. As Napoleon and his army was making their way to Moscow, they encountered typhus, colds, and dysentery. Even the mighty Napoleon had caught a mild case of the flu. Simply being an eyewitness to family violence has a great effect upon a youngster. Derek and Danny Vinyard (American History X) witnessed the murder of their father by a black man. Nevertheless, although they may not have realized, they were being conditioned to believe that 'what happened to their father was an act of racism by the black man'. Moreover, Derek had already been influenced by his father's cynical views on African American culture. When they became grown-up, Derek and Danny lead a life of a "vengeance-seeking white supremacist" (Synopsis for American History X, www.imdb.com). Parents' own behavior has an enormous consequence on a young child's mind. Hally's (Master Harold and the Boys) father is a drunkard and a tyrant. He grew up having resentment for his father. On one incident, Hally unleashed "years of anger and pain on his two black friends; creating possibly-permanent rifts in his relationship with them" (Master Harold and the Boys, www.en.wikipedia.org). Careful students of the appalling increase of violence in our dangerous times list many contributing factors: the media emphasis on violent events, crime and corruption; the way world leaders shamelessly resort to violence to stay in power; the sense of utter frustration with injustices that never seem to be resolved, leading some to feel that bullets will accomplish what ballots cannot; the callous way inwhich millions of the unborn are violently wrenched from existence by abortion; the way religious leaders uphold "just" wars and yet do not uphold moral principles in the face of lowering standards. The world soon gets desensitized, inured to violence. And there are other reasons. The permissiveness of supposed progressive thinking in our time has altered customs and moral standards, removing the restraints that once served to check attitudes and actions that can lead to violence. The sad effect is seen especially in the young. It is not an exaggeration, therefore, to say that what a person reads or sees has an effect on his attitudes. Sexual abuses and perversions also breed violence by destroying all sense of decency. No matter what is the cause of violence is, the question remains: Does this mean that mankind is doomed to an endless cycle of vicious and escalating violence Happily, our knowing that what now exists is a temporary situation, soon to end, and that there is a way out, can give us strength to endure. Many of Jehovah's Witnesses testify to this. You, too, can 'escape all these things that are destined to occur.' About these same woes for this time of the end, Jesus said: "As these things start to occur, raise yourselves erect and lift your heads up, because your deliverance is getting near."
